چکیده

In this Letter, we describe a solar flare that was observed by Yohkoh in 1999 January 20. This long-duration event is notable because the Yohkoh images show not only the formation of the arcade associated with the coronal mass ejection but also a considerable amount of motion above the arcade in the region normally identified with a large-scale current sheet or the outflow from magnetic reconnection in the current sheet. A number of arcade events of this morphological type (i.e., a fan of spikelike “rays” above the posteruption loops) have been seen by Yohkoh, but in this case we have a much clearer view of mass motions in the region above the arcade. The motions indicate field-line retraction without the formation of long-lasting cusps during the rise phase of the flare, and a downward flow above the arcade during the decay phase. The late-phase downward motion is in the form of X-ray dark voids moving at 100–200 km s , i.e., at velocities much smaller than the free-fall speed or 21 the assumed Alfvén speed. We interpret the voids as cross sections of evacuated flux tubes resulting from intermittent reconnection following the associated coronal mass ejection. We believe these data represent the first direct evidence of high-speed flows in the region immediately above the flare loops. Subject headings: Sun: flares — Sun: magnetic fields

The impulsive phase of the arcade flare of 28 June 1992, 14:24 UT

Yohkoh Soft X–Ray Telescope and Hard X–Ray Telescope observations of an M 1.6 limb flare of 28 June 1992, 14:24 UT have been analyzed. The flare occurred in a magnetic arcade. Basic observational characteristics of soft and hard X–ray emission for this flare have been compared. Excellent examples of impulsive soft X–ray brightenings have been found. Velocities of the chromospheric evaporation h...

Soho Eit Observations of Extreme-ultraviolet “dimming” Associated with a Halo Coronal Mass Ejection

A solar flare was observed on 1997 April 7 with the Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) on Yohkoh. The flare was associated with a “halo” coronal mass ejection (CME). The flaring region showed areas of reduced soft X-ray (SXR) brightness—“dimmings”—that developed prior to the CME observed in white light and persisted for several hours following the CME. The most prominent dimming regions were located ne...

The Ribbon-like Hard X-ray Emission in a Sigmoidal Solar Active Region

Solar flare emissions at Hα and EUV/UV wavelengths often appear in the form of two ribbons, which has been regarded as evidence for a typical configuration of solar magnetic reconnection. However, such a ribbon structure has rarely been observed in hard X-rays (HXRs), although it is expected as well. In this letter, we report a ribbon-like HXR source observed with the Reuven Ramaty High Energy ...

Radio and Hard X–ray Images of High–Energy Electrons in a Compact X-class Solar Flare

We present the first comparison between radio images of high–energy electrons accelerated by a solar flare and images of hard X–rays produced by the same electrons at photon energies above 100 keV. The radio and hard X–ray light curves match each other well and both light curves and spectra are quantitatively consistent with an origin in a single population of nonthermal electrons with a power ...

Ja n 20 04 RHESSI Observations of a Simple Large X - ray Flare on 11 - 03 - 2003

We present data analysis and interpretation of a simple large X-class flare observed with RHESSI. In contrast to other large flares observed previously, the flare shows a very simple morphology with well defined looptop (LT) and footpoint (FP) sources. The correlated motions of these sources are consistent with the simplest magnetic reconnection models proposed for solar flares. Imaging spectro...
